Following an earthquake of magnitude 8.7 in Sumatra today, a tsunami alert for Mauritius and the Indian Ocean has been issued. The earthquake occured at about 6.38pm AEST and the tremors were felt even in Thailand, Singapore and parts of India. A tsunami alert for the Indian Ocean (including Mauritius) was immediately placed following the earthquake which occured at a depth of about 33km and 495km to the South West of Sumatra.
