Independence
People are saying that the British would have sooner or later given Mauritius its independence, as the running of the country was proving to be both costly and difficult. I do not agree. It was not easy to fight for independence because United Kingdom was attached economically to Mauritius, due to our success in the sugarcane industry. Moreover, Mauritius was a « plaque tournante » for neighbouring countries.
